二、从句中的省略

1.主句中的省略

（It is a pity）That such a noble man should die！ 真可惜那样高贵的人却要死！

（How glad I should be）If I could do so.但愿我能如此做。

2.宾语从句中的省略

She will go to Beijing，but I don’t know when （she will go to Beijing）.

她要去北京，但我不知何时。

Tom was sad，but I don’t know why （he was sad）.汤姆不高兴，但我不知原因。

3.状语从句中的省略

（1）连词+介词短语

While （she was）at college，Delia wrote a novel.上大学时，迪莉娅写了一部小说。

While （he was）in London，he studied the English labour movement.

在伦敦时，他研究英国工人运动。

（2）连词+形容词

Whenever （she is）free，she often goes shopping.她有空就去逛商店。

Though （he was）exhausted，he stayed up late.尽管疲惫不堪，他仍很晚才睡。

I could come earlier，if （it is）necessary.如果有必要我可以早点来。

Trees should be pruned when （it is）necessary.必要的时候，树木是应该修剪的。

if any 即使有　　　　　　　　　　if anything 如果有什么

if anybody 若有人的话　　　　　　if ever 假如曾经

if necessary 如果有必要的话　　　if not 假如不是这样的话

if possible 如果可能的话　　　　 if so 假如这样的话

（3）连词+名词

As （he was）a young man，Lincoln worked as a storekeeper.

年轻时林肯当过仓库管理员。

My stepfather treated me as if （he was）my own father.继父带我如同亲生。

（4）连词+现在分词

She trembled a little while （she was）doing so.她这样做时稍稍颤抖了一下。

When （you are）cycling，don’t forget the traffic lights.骑车时，不要忘记看红绿灯。

（5）连词+过去分词

When （she was）asked，she confirmed that she was going to retire.

有人问她时，她肯定了她将要退休。

When （it is）taken according to the instructions，the drug has no side effects.

若按说明服用，本药无任何副作用。

（6）连词+不定式

He opened his lips as if （he was）to speak.他张开嘴似乎要说话。

He wouldn’t solve the problem even if （he was）to take charge.

即使他来负责，他也解决不了这个问题。

【提示】

（1）只有状语从句和主句中的主语一致，从句中才可以用省略形式。

When （you are）crossing the street，you should be careful.

过马路时你应该当心。（省略“主语+助动词”）

Unless （I am）invited，I won’t go to the evening party.

除非受到邀请，否则我不会出席晚会。（省略“主语+助动词”）

While （I was）in America，I learned a lot about American customs.

在美国时我了解了许多美国的风俗习惯。（省略“主语+be”）

（2）as，though引导的让步状语从句的倒装语序中，如果名词提前要省略冠词。

Child as/though he is，he knows much about the society.

尽管是个孩子，他非常了解社会。
