5月22日，“杂交水稻之父”袁隆平因多器官衰竭去世，享年91岁。受中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平委托，湖南省委书记许达哲专程看望了袁隆平同志的家属，转达习近平对袁隆平同志的深切悼念和对其家属的亲切问候。
President Xi Jinping has extended condolences to the family of scientist Yuan Longping, known as "father of hybrid rice," who died from multiple organ failure on May 22 at age 91. The condolences of Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, were conveyed by the secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee Xu Dazhe, according to Hunan Daily. Xu visited Yuan's family and conveyed Xi's mourning for Yuan's passing.

In the message, Xi highly affirmed Yuan's contribution to China's food security, innovation in agricultural technology, and world grain development. Xi urged Party members, cadres, and science and technology professionals to learn from Yuan, emphasizing that the best way to memorialize the scientist is to learn from him, particularly his love for the Party, the motherland and the people, his dedication to the needs of the motherland and the people, and his aspiration to serve the motherland and the people.

一颗种子可以改变一个世界。作为世界上第一个成功利用水稻杂种优势的科学家，袁隆平始终为端稳中国人的饭碗和保障世界粮食安全不懈奋斗。
1971年春，湖南省农业科学院成立杂交稻研究协作组，袁隆平调省农业科学院杂交稻研究协作组工作。2年后，袁隆平在苏州召开的水稻科研会议上发表了《利用“野稗”选育三系的进展》的论文，正式宣告中国籼型杂交水稻“三系”已经配套，产量在原来基础上增产一倍有余。
1986年，袁隆平正式提出杂交水稻育种战略：由三系法向两系法，再到一系法，在程序上朝着由繁到简但效率更高的方向发展。
9年努力，两系法获得成功！1996年，农业部正式立项超级稻育种计划。4年后，第一期每亩700公斤目标实现。随后便是2004年800公斤、2011年900公斤、2014年1000公斤的“三连跳”。
2020年11月2日，位于湖南省衡南县的第三代杂交水稻新组合试验示范基地迎来晚稻测产，测得晚稻平均亩产为911.7公斤，加上7月份测得的早稻平均亩产619.06公斤，由杂交水稻双季测产突破1500公斤大关，再一次刷新纪录。
自杂交水稻大面积推广应用以来，我国水稻亩产大幅度提升，为确保国家粮食安全提供了有力支撑。杂交水稻还在亚洲、美洲、非洲的众多国家和地区大面积种植，为消除世界饥饿与贫困作出了突出贡献。
