[00:25.08] He appears to thrive on pressures and responsibilities, getting up every morning, putting on his million watt smile and going at life hard. [00:36.24] This is Tom Cruise we are talking about, one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. [00:41.47] But when he was born in 1962, he did not have money, influence or famous friends. [00:48.02] What he had was Mary Lee, his tough, optimistic mum, and a determination not to be just a good looking average Joe. [00:58.06] Cruise worked hard, moving to New York, then Los Angeles, to begin acting, and then created a wonderful life for the two kids he adopted with actress Nicole Kidman, [01:09.18] whom he divorced in 2001. [01:12.52] That leads to one of the next big things Cruise would like to change: his status as a single guy. [01:20.23] The following is an interview given by's Reader Digest. [01:24.44] RD: Were you always close to your sisters? [01:27.19] Cruise: Always. [01:28.08] Bing raised with women, I saw their side of things. [01:31.27] I got an understanding. [01:32.31] RD: You seem to have a real respect for women. [01:36.21] What is it that you like so much about them? [01:39.12] Cruise: They smell good. [01:40.25] They look pretty. [01:41.35] I love women. [01:42.32] I really do. [01:43.50] RD: What do you think your strength is as a parent? [01:47.26] Cruise: Everything! [01:48.50] I 'm a great parent. [01:50.02] I want to be with my kids. [01:51.57] They are happy. [01:53.17] They get to do all the stuff I wanted to do when I was growing up. [01:57.06] RD: What do you want your children to learn about life? [02:00.17] Cruise: I 've told them anything is possible. [02:04.01] I started them when they were young, first swimming, then riding, hiking, climbing. [02:10.27] It's giving them confidence to learn, to put in them a sense of integrity, sympathy and understanding. [02:18.15] RD: Do you want to be married again and have more children? [02:20.54] Cruise: Yeah, yeah. [02:22.37] I love kids. [02:24.12] And I 'd like to get married. [02:25.50] I like being in a relationship. [02:28.48] RD: So how does Tom Cruise, single guy, find a girlfriend? [02:32.42] Cruise: They call me up. [02:34.31] RD: How is it going? [02:35.53] Cruise: I 'm dating, but I do not have a girlfriend. [02:39.36] RD: And you 're confident you 'll find somebody? [02:41.33] Cruise: I have to. [02:43.35] There has to be that woman out there. [02:45.56] I want to be with someone who's going to be a lot of fun. [02:49.39] Someone who does not mind traveling, loves kids, loves a lot of activities. [02:54.25] Someone I can really trust, someone who can really communicate, someone who enjoys life. [03:02.11] RD: You reconciled with your father before he died. [03:05.05] What was that like? [03:06.53] Cruise: I saw him right before he died. [03:09.12] So I do not fell regret. [03:11.21] You look at people in his position, and you feel bad for them, for what they missed in life. [03:17.21] I understand what he was going through.
