[00:14.33]Listening 1

[00:17.93]Exercise 1

[00:21.24]Directions:

[00:24.84]Listen to the talk and choose the best answer to each question you hear on the tape.

[00:31.75]People today are running, jumping, jogging, and dancing.

[00:39.38]If they don't have time to go to an exercise class,

[00:44.60]they watch a fitness program on TV and do the exercises at home.

[00:52.31]I have a lazy friend who doesn't think all this exercise is good for people.

[00:58.32]He said, "My doctor told me jogging could add years to my life.

[01:04.87]He must be right because I fell ten years older already."

[01:10.78]Of course the doctor meant that exercising would help myfriend live ten years longer

[01:18.19]and not that it would make him feel older!

[01:22.66]My own doctor says that running is healthy, and I think he's right.

[01:28.52]He says that it's especially good for the heart, the legs, the ankles,

[01:35.69]and the economy.

[01:39.43]"How does it help the economy?" I asked. "When you run," he replied,

[01:45.59]"you're helping to provide jobs for people who make sneakers and running pants,

[01:51.56]and for doctors who treat people for feet and back problems."

[01:57.86]My wife says she doesn't have time to exercise.

[02:03.26]She says the only way she can exercise is to shop faster.

[02:09.56]The faster she walks, the more calories she burns! It makes sense.

[02:16.15]I have a lot of friends who get in their cars and drive three blocks

[02:21.80]to their exercise class.

[02:25.15]If they are interested in exercise, why don't they walk to their exercise class?

[02:31.24]Well, I suppose some exercise is better than none.

[02:37.03]Exercising is very popular.

[02:41.06]It's amazing how much money people are willing to spend just to stay fit.

[02:47.15]It's also amazing how much pain they are willing to tolerate just to stay fit.

[02:54.20]1)What is the main idea of the passage?

[02:59.82]2)How many examples are mentioned in the passage?

[03:06.48]3)What is the benefit of jogging according to the doctor?

[04:20.10]Listening 2

[04:23.59]Exercise 1

[04:27.95]Directions:

[04:31.26]Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.

[04:37.45]The Health Benefits of Chicken Soup

[04:42.82]When colds or flu attack,

[04:46.60]many people treat themselves to the comfort of warm blankets and hot chicken soup.

[04:54.52]Chicken soup has been shown to be more than just a comfort food, however.

[05:01.43]An ancient Greek manuscript written around 200BC

[05:07.84]describes how chicken soup can be used to treat respiratory disorders,

[05:14.53]such as cold and flu.

[05:18.92]In the 12th century another Greek scholar wrote

[05:24.32]that chicken soup eases the symptoms people have when they have colds and flu.

[05:31.99]Modern research is showing that there is a basis for this old belief

[05:37.86]that chicken soup can help the common cold or other respiratory problems.

[05:44.77]Here is what scientists have learned.

[05:49.02]When a person gets a cold, the cold virus makes itself at home in one's nose,

[05:56.80]sinuses and throat, resulting in swelling in these areas.

[06:03.28]The result is sore throat, headache, congestion, coughing, etc.

[06:11.63]One experiment showed that hot chicken soup

[06:17.21]can clear the congestion that comes with a cold.

[06:22.28]This experiment also showed that it wasn't just the steam from soup or tea,

[06:29.74]or any other liquid that helps the blockage of sinuses.

[06:34.85]Chicken soup contains compounds that stop the swelling which causes this problem.

[06:43.13]Scientists still don't know why chicken soup works, but they are sure that it does.

[06:51.48]They have also found that in order to be effective,

[06:56.30]the soup must be made with vegetables.

[07:01.27]Scientists think that it may be due to the presence

[07:06.35]of some healthful elements found in plants.

[07:12.04]Perhaps the best evidence for the effectiveness of chicken soup

[07:17.15]comes from the research of one scientist who found that

[07:22.33]chicken soup is rich in a chemical widely used in cold medicines.

[07:28.63]Thus, when your mother or grandmother

[07:32.99]tells you to eat chicken soup when you have a cold or flu,

[07:38.75]go ahead and enjoy it.

[07:42.42]You will be doing something worthwhile for your body as well as pleasing her.

[07:49.26]Exercise 2

[07:52.97]Directions:

[07:56.21]Listen to the passage again

[08:00.53]and fill in the blanks with the information you get from the tape.

[08:06.86]Exercise 3

[08:10.72]Directions:

[08:14.24]Listen to the passage for the third time

[08:18.96]and discuss in groups the following questions.

[08:24.36]1)What is the possible reason for the healthy effects of chicken soup?

[08:32.82]2)What do you usually do when you have a cold or flu?
