[00:-5.00]Section 1 New words and ideas

[00:-6.00]Men and Women:Different roles?

[00:-7.00]One day in school, the English teacher gave the class a writing assignment.

[00:-8.00]Each student had to write an essay about an exciting place they had visited.

[00:-9.00]Jenny had a great story to tell.

[00:10.00]Not very long ago she went to China to visit her very good friend,Li Ming.

[00:11.00]Where to begin? She had seen so many wonderful things,

[00:12.00]met so many great people, and learned so much.

[00:13.00]How could she tell the whole story?

[00:14.00]She remembered one afternoon at Li Ming's house.

[00:15.00]It was an ordeinary afternoon, but for some reason,

[00:16.00]she remembered every detail of the day.

[00:17.00]She smiled to herself as she began to write.

[00:18.00]Li Ming invited some friends over to his house on a Sunday afternoon.

[00:19.00]It was raining that day,so everyone was happy just to hang out for the afternoon.

[00:20.00]The kids were talking and making jokes with one another.

[00:21.00]One of Li Ming's buddies asked Jenny what she wanted to do after high school.

[00:22.00]"I'm not sure yet,but I think I might want to be a welder,'replied Jenny.

[00:23.00]"A welder?What's a welder?"asked the friend.

[00:24.00]"A welder is someone who joins two pieces of metal together

[00:25.00]by heating the edges and fixing them,"

[00:26.00]explained Jenny with the help of gestures.

[00:27.00]"What!"exclaimed the friend."Girls can't be welders!"

[00:28.00]"Why not?"asked Jenny."My uncle was a welder and I think it is a good job.

[00:29.00]Besides,I know I can make a lot of money joing this job."

[00:30.00]"Yeah,but it's man's job.it's only for guys,"said another friend.

[00:31.00]"I can't believe you guys still think that way.

[00:32.00]Things have changed, you know.Nowadays, girls can do any job they want.

[00:33.00]Isn't it the same in China?"Jenny was curious.

[00:34.00]"Well,"said one of Li Ming's female friends."Girls can do those jobs,

[00:35.00]but why would they want to?

[00:36.00]There are much easier and more suitable jobs for women,

[00:37.00]like being a nurse or a teacher. They should choose one of those...

[00:38.00]Hey,Li Ming, would you like me to get you another drink?"

[00:39.00]"Wait a minute,Qianqian."Jenny said.

[00:40.00]"Why are you getting a drink for Li Ming?

[00:41.00]He lives hera and he can get his own drink. He's not a baby."

[00:42.00]"Relax,Jenny.I know what!I was just going to the kitchen to get one for myself

[00:43.00]and I noticed his glass was empty.

[00:44.00]Can't a friend do a favour for a friend?"asked Qianqian.

[00:45.00]Jenny felt a little embarrassed.

[00:46.00]Li Ming noticed what was going on between Jenny and Qianqian.

[00:47.00]He is a sensitive and caring person. He wanted to make it better.

[00:48.00]He put his arm around Jenny's shoulder and said,

[00:49.00]"I knew what you meant,Jen.But really,

[00:50.00]don't you think that there is such a things as man's work and woman's work?

[00:51.00]Like in your house, for example, who does the cooking and the laundry,

[00:52.00]and who cuts the grass and changes the oil in the car?"

[00:53.00]"Yes,that's true.My mom takes care of the house and the kitchen

[00:54.00]and my dad takes care of the car and the yard.

[00:55.00]But just because that works for them doesn't mean it would be good for me.

[00:56.00]If we are always concerned about who we are supposed to be,

[00:57.00]how will we know who we really are?

[00:58.00]I think we should all be free to be exactly who we are."

[-1:-7.00]"Oh you crazy guy,"said Jenny

[-1:-8.00]as she reached over and picked the spider off Li Ming's shoes.

[-1:-9.00]"I thought only girls were supposed to be afraid of spiders."

[-1:10.00]"I can't help it,"said Li Ming,deeply embarrassed.

[-1:11.00]"But don't you see,Li Ming? It's a good thing. You are exactly how your are[-1:12.00]You don't have to be one way or another just

[-1:13.00]just because people expect men or women to be that way.
