Fresh violence in Eastern Congo

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday, the 5th of November. Iam Valory Sundus with a selection of highlights from across BBC World Service News today.

Coming up, fresh violence erupts in eastern Congo. The leader of the M23 rebels explains whyhis men still fight despite promising a cease-fire. "Why do you want as to stop fight when thegovernment army are shooting us?" We'll speak to our correspondent in Goma. As Egypt'sousted president goes on trial, our correspondent is there. "As the judge struggled to keepcontrol, Mr. Morsi shouted: 'I am the president'." Also a billion dollars worth of art turns upin a dingy German flat. But how many other modern masterpieces looted by the Nazis are outthere? And who's got them. And why India's spending millions of dollars to go to the redplanet? "If India can beat China in reaching Mars, imagine what could be the national pride ofIndia?"

But first, is this the end of M23 movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo? Heavyfighting is taking place in the east of the country as government soldiers backed by the UnitedNations try to clear the last areas held by the rebels close to the border with Rwanda andUganda. There had been talk of a cease-fire of the weekend which didn't happen. Now eachside is shelling the other. And civilians caught up in the fight are fleeing to Uganda. Earliertoday our reporter Acnitious Behizi was on the border with Uganda talking to refugees as theshelling continued. "Their mood is very tense. People are really broken down. They have beenin this kind of torsion of life in a long time. I think actually another disaster is likely to happen. You can hear the shooting now. That's heavy. People are crying. People are suffering. Peopledon't have what to eat. I think another disaster might come up in the near future becauseeven if Congo settles, people have not been cultivating. They don't have food. They havenbeen running in and out. So they have no time to settle. Some of them, as I've been told, theyhave been stolen; their cars have been stolen. They think even if Congo settles in the nearfuture, their problems will hang here." The civilian head of the M23 is in Uganda for talks. He told the BBC the rebels were responding to shelling from the government troops.
