几个常用名词的易错说明

一、people可用表复数形式吗

1. 当people表示“人”“人们”时，只用单数形式，但总是表示复数意义。如：

Young people like surfing the Internet. 年轻人喜欢上网。

表示“一个人”时，不能用one people，可根据情况改用one person, one man, one woman, one boy等。

2. people表示“民族”时是可数名词，其前可用不定冠词，也可复数形式。

We Chinese are a hardworking people. 我们中国人是勤劳的人民。

Ireland was inhabited by two peoples. 爱尔兰居住着两个民族。

比较：

How many peoples live in Asia? 亚洲有多少个民族?

How many people live in the room? 这房间住了多少人?

有时它还可与few, many等连用。如：

Few peoples in the world can boast (of) such an old civilization as ours. 世界上没有几个民族有像我国民族这样悠久的文化。

二、police是表总称还是表个体

原则上说，people表示“警察”的总称，含有“警方”“警察当局”之意，其前通常用the（有时也可省略），形式上是单数，但含义上为复数；用作主语时，谓语要用复数。如：

I saw him being taken away by the police. 我看到他正被警察带走。

I’m against doing anything till the police arrive. 在警察到来之前我反对做任何事。

The police believe him to be dangerous. 警方认为他是个危险人物。

注意，当表示“一个警察”时，不能用它，即不能说a [one] police，而应根据情况用a policeman / a policewoman；不过，当表示多个警察时，可用它。如：

There were over 100 police on duty. 有超过百名警察值班。

三、fun可连用不定冠词吗

fun表示“有趣的事”“娱乐”“玩笑”等，永远不可数，既不能连用不定冠词，也不能用复数形式。如：

扬帆驾舟十分有趣。

误：It’s a great fun to sail a boat.

正：It’s great fun to sail a boat.

我们在海滩上玩得开心。

误：We have a great deal of funs on the beach.

正：We have a great deal of fun on the beach.

四、clothes与clothing有何区别

两者均可表示衣服的统称，但clothes是一个没有单数形式的复数名词（永远是复数），而clothing则是一个没有复数形式的单数名词（永远不可数）。如：

His clothes were torn and bloody. 他的衣服撕破了并染有血迹。

Your clothes are in the top drawer on the left. 你的衣服放在左边上面的抽屉里。

比较而言，clothes的含义比较具体，而clothing的含义则比较抽象。如：

Hang the clothes on the line. 把这些衣服挂在晾衣绳上。

Our clothing protects us against the cold. 我们的衣服可以御寒。

若不考虑其细微区别，两者常可换用。如：

Warm clothes are [clothing is] a must in the mountains. 在山里厚衣服是必不可少的。

另外，在a wolf in sheep’s clothing（披着羊皮的狼）这一习语中，习惯上用clothing。如：

They were our worst enemies—wolves in sheep’s clothing. 他们是我们最危险的敌人——是披着羊皮的狼。
