mankind的语法与用法

1. 基本用法

mankind的意思是“人类”，它是一个不可数的集合名词，不用复数形式，也不连用冠词。如：

the worst war in the history of mankind 人类历史上最糟糕的战争

Language is peculiar to mankind. 语言是人类特有的。

Sympathy is the feeling characteristic of mankind. 同情心是人类特有的情感。

The civilization of mankind has taken thousands of years. 人类经数千年才文明开化。

We labour for the happiness of mankind. 我们为人类的幸福而工作。

2. 使用代词

mankind 后通常用 it, its 之类的代词，而不用 he, his 等。如：

Mankind has its own problems. 人类有自己的问题。

比较：若用 man 表示“人类”，则用 he, his 等代词。如：

Man has his problems.

3. 特别提醒

前面说过，mankind 表示“人类”是一个表集合意义的不可数名词，因此不能有复数形式。但有趣的是，它有时可视为复数，尤其是其表语是复数时。如：

Mankind are intelligent animals. 人是理智的动物。

另外，在现代英语中，有的人认为用 mankind 来表示“人类”，是对女性的歧视，建议用humans, human beings, the human race 等代之。
