远香近臭，各种气味都该怎么说？

smell 气味，表示「气味」的时候，是中性词，没有特别指香或者臭。

The air was filled with the smell of flowers.
空气中弥漫着花香。
I think the smell’s getting worse.
我觉得这气味越来越难闻了。

smelly 难闻的

值得注意的是smell作为副词就变成臭的，难闻的意思了。

stinky 发臭的

If the Chinese disdain the cheeses enjoyed by Europeans, they themselves adore some stinky foods that would appall many foreigners.
虽然中国人厌恶欧洲人喜欢的奶酪，但他们自己却推崇一些臭到让外国人感到惊骇的食物。

臭豆腐就可以说成：stinky tofu

odour（英式）/ odor（美式）异味
odor 通常指让人感到不愉快的气味，或者是对某些人来说独特的气味。

比如：

de+odor+ant （前缀de- 表示去除，后缀-ant表示以名词词性结尾）

此外，fragrance还可以指「香水」：

scent 香味

表示香味或香水时它和 fragrance 几乎没有区别，不过大家可否还记得，在前面的英文学习中，小编也提到了英国皇室成员说香水是不说fragrance或者perfume的，而说scent这个词以显示身份尊贵。

aroma 芳香
它除了植物清香之外，还常常用来指合成香料或食物的香味。

比如：The non-brewed sauces take only two days to make and are often opaque with a harsh flavor and chemical aroma.
酸水解法只需两天，成品往往具有刺激性的味道、不透明和明显的化学香气。
A delicious aroma was coming from the kitchen.

厨房里飘来诱人的香味。
