“屋顶到了!”
He flung open the gates. The warm glory ofafternoon sunlight made him start and blink hiseyes. "Oh, roof!" he repeated in a voice of rapture.He was as though suddenly and joyfully awakenedfrom a dark annihilating stupor. "Roof!"
他砰的一声打开大门，午后的阳光的温暖和明亮让他一震，“哦，屋顶到了!”他再次带着狂欢的口气说，仿佛猛然从人事不省的昏沉里快活地醒了过来，“屋顶到了。”
He smiled up with a kind of doggily expectantadoration into the faces of his passengers.
他抬头望着客人们的脸笑了，带着有所期待的崇拜，像条狗。
Talking and laughing together, they stepped out into the light. The liftman looked after them.
客人们说说笑笑走进阳光里。电梯工望着他们。
"Roof?" he said once more, questioningly.
“是上屋顶吧?”他疑问地重复了一句。
Then a bell rang, and from the ceiling of the lift a loud speaker began, very softly and yet veryimperiously, to issue its commands.
一声铃响，电梯天花板上传出扩音器的声音，发出了命令，十分轻柔却也威严。
"Go down," it said, "go down. Floor Eighteen. Go down, go down. Floor Eighteen. Go down, go…"
“下行!”那声音说，“下行。十八楼。下行，下行。十八楼。下行……。”
The liftman slammed the gates, touched a button and instantly dropped back into the droningtwilight of the well, the twilight of his own habitual stupor.
电梯工砰的一声关上门，一按按钮，电梯立即往梯井里嗡嗡响着的暗处掉了下去，那是他所习惯的黑暗。
It was warm and bright on the roof.
房顶温暖而明亮。
The summer afternoon was drowsy with the hum of passing helicopters; and the deeper droneof the rocket-planes hastening, invisible, through the bright sky five or six miles overhead waslike a caress on the soft air.
直升机嗡嗡地飞，飞得夏日的午后睡意蒙俄。火箭飞机从五六英里外的晴朗的天空急速掠过，虽然看不见，它那更加深沉的轰鸣却仿佛是在抚摩着柔和的空气。
Bernard Marx drew a deep breath. He looked up into the sky and round the blue horizon andfinally down into Lenina's face.
伯纳·马克思做了一个深呼吸，抬头看了看天空，再看了看四周蓝色的地平线，最后看到了列宁娜的脸。
"Isn't it beautiful!" His voice trembled a little.
“多么美丽呀!”他的声音有点颤抖。
She smiled at him with an expression of the most sympathetic understanding.
她带着最为深沉的同情对他理解地笑了，
"Simply perfect for Obstacle Golf," she answered rapturously."And now I must fly, Bernard.Henry gets cross if I keep him waiting.
“玩障碍高尔夫再好也没有了，”她欢快地回答，“现在我要飞了，伯纳。老叫亨利等着是会惹他生气的。
Let me know in good time about the date."
定好了日期可要及时通知我哟。”
And waving her hand she ran away across the wide flat roof towards the hangars.
她挥着手迈过平坦广阔的屋顶向飞机库走去。
Bernard stood watching the retreating twinkle of the white stockings,the sunburnt kneesvivaciously bending and unbending again, again, and the softer rolling of those well-fittedcorduroy shorts beneath the bottle green jacket.
伯纳站着，望着离去的白袜的闪光;望着她那晒黑的膝盖矫健地伸直，弯曲，再伸直，再弯曲;望着玻瓶绿的短外衣下那里身的灯心绒短裤。
His face wore an expression of pain.
他脸上露出了痛苦的表情。
