"Warden's Office," he said to the Gamma-greenoctoroon.

“总监官邸。”他对伽玛绿八分之一混血儿说。

At ten fifty-four Bernard was shaking hands with theWarden.

十点五十四分伯纳已经在跟总监握手。

"Delighted, Mr. Marx, delighted." His boom wasdeferential.

“很高兴，马克思先生，很高兴，”他那轰响的嗓子透着尊敬。

We have just received special orders …

我们刚收到了特别命令……

"I know," said Bernard, interrupting him.

“我知道，”伯纳打断了他的话。

I was talking to his fordship on the phone a moment ago.

我刚才才跟总统阁下通过话。

His bored tone implied that he was in the habit of talking to his fordship every day of the week.

他那厌倦的口气暗示着他习惯于每周七天都跟总统阁下通话。

He dropped into a chair.

他一屁股坐进了椅子。

If you'll kindly take all the necessary steps as soon as possible.

请你尽快采取必要措施。

"As soon as possible," he emphatically repeated.

“尽快”，他特别强调尽快。

He was thoroughly enjoying himself.

他对自己十分欣赏。

At eleven three he had all the necessary papers in his pocket.

十一点零三分所有的文件已经进了他的口袋。

"So long," he said patronizingly to the Warden, who had accompanied him as far as the liftgates. "So long."

“再见。”他居高临下地对总监说。总监已经陪着他走到了电梯门口。

He walked across to the hotel, had a bath, a vibro-vac massage, and an electrolytic shave,listened in to the morning's news, looked in for half an hour on the televisor, ate a leisuredluncheon, and at half-past two flew back with the octoroon to Malpais.

他步行到了宾馆，洗了个澡，做了真空振动按摩，用电动刀刮了胡子，听了早间新闻，看了半小时电视，才慢条斯理吃了午饭。两点半钟他已经跟八分之一混血儿一起飞回了马尔佩斯。

The young man stood outside the rest-house.

小伙子站在招待所门外。

"Bernard," he called. "Bernard!"

“伯纳，”他叫道，“帕纳!”

There was no answer.

没有人回答。

Noiseless on his deerksin moccasins, he ran up the steps and tried the door. The door waslocked.

小伙子穿着鹿皮靴，走路没有声音。他跑上台阶，拽了拽门，门关着。

They were gone! Gone!

他们走了!

It was the most terrible thing that had ever happened to him.

那是他所遇见过的最可怕的事。

She had asked him to come and see them, asd now they were gone.

列宁娜请他来看他们，可他们却走掉了。

He sat down on the steps and cried.

他在台阶上坐下，哭了起来。

Half an hour later it occurred to him to look through the window.

半小时后他想起往窗户里望望。

The first thing he saw was a green suit-case, with the initials L.C. painted on the lid.

Joy flared up like fire within him.

He picked up a stone.

他拣起一块石头。

The smashed glass tinkled on the floor.

A moment later he was inside the room.

He opened the green suit-case; and all at once he was breathing Lenina's perfume, filling hislungs with her essential being.

一打开绿色的手提箱他立即闻到了列宁娜的香水味。那香味弥漫了他的肺叶，那是列宁娜的香味呢。

His heart beat wildly; for a moment he was almost faint.

他的心脏急剧地跳动起来，他几乎晕了过去。

Then, bending over the precious box, he touched, he lifted into the light, he examined.

The zippers on Lenina's spare pair of viscose velveteen shorts were at first a puzzle, thensolved, a delight. Zip, and then zip; zip, and then zip; he was enchanted.

他起初对列宁娜用来换洗的新腔天鹅绒短裤上的拉链弄不明白，到他明白过来，便觉得很好玩;拉过去，拉过来，再拉过去，又拉过来;他着迷了。

Her green slippers were the most beautiful things he had ever seen.
