Yes, in danger, ladies and gentlemen.

This man, he pointed accusingly at Bernard, this man who stands before you here, this Alpha-Plus to whom so much has been given, and from whom, in consequence, so much must beexpected, this colleague of yours—or should I anticipate and say this 'excolleague'—hasgrossly betrayed the trust imposed in him.

他谴责地指着伯纳。现在站在你们面前的这个人，这个阿尔法加得到的很多，因此，我们也有理由要求他很多。你们的这位同事——我也许应该提前叫他‘这位以前的同事’?——严重地辜负了大家对他的信任。

By his heretical views on sport and soma, by the scandalous unorthodoxy of his sex-life, byhis refusal to obey the teachings of Our Ford and behave out of office hours, even as a littleinfant,(here the Director made the sign of the T), he has proved himself an enemy of Society, asubverter, ladies and gentlemen, of all Order and Stability, a conspirator against Civilizationitself.

For this reason I propose to dismiss him, to dismiss him with ignominy from the post he hasheld in this Centre; I propose forthwith to apply for his transference to a Subcentre of thelowest order and, that his punishment may serve the best interest of Society, as far as possibleremoved from any important Centre of population.

In Iceland he will have small opportunity to lead others astray by his unfordly example.

The Director paused; then, folding his arms, he turned impressively to Bernard.

主任住了口，交叉了双手，威风凛凛地转向了伯纳。

"Marx," he said, "can you show any reason why I should not now execute the judgment passedupon you?"

他说：“伯纳，你能够提出理由反对我执行对你的处分吗?”

"Yes, I can," Bernard answered in a very loud voice.

“是的，我能够。”伯纳用非常响亮的声音回答。

Somewhat taken aback, but still majestically, "Then show it," said the Director.

主任多少吓了一跳，但仍然神气十足，“那你就提出来吧。”

"Certainly. But it's in the passage. One moment." Bernard hurried to the door and threw itopen.

“当然要提出来，但我的理由还在走道里，请稍候。”伯纳匆匆走到门边，甩开了门。

"Come in," he commanded, and the reason came in and showed itself.

“进来。”他命令道，那“理由”便走了进来，露出了它的形象。
