The Director went suddenly pale, stopped strugglingand stood, his hands on her wrists, staring down ather, horrified.

Turning towards the door, "John!" she called. "John!"

He came in at once, paused for a moment just inside the door, looked round, then soft on hismoccasined feet strode quickly across the room, fell on his knees in front of the Director, andsaid in a clear voice: "My father!"

The word (for "father" was not so much obscene as–with its connotation of something at oneremove from the loathsomeness and moral obliquity of child-bearing—merely gross, ascatological rather than a pornographic impropriety); the comically smutty word relievedwhat had become a quite intolerable tension.

那个字，那个猥亵得可笑的字，破除了十分难堪的紧张，因为从“爸爸”引起的联想毕竟跟生育的可憎和道德的邪恶隔了一层;这个字不文明，却只是肮脏而不涉淫秽。这个可笑的肮脏字眼缓和了难以忍受的紧张气氛。

Laughter broke out, enormous, almost hysterical, peal after peal, as though it would neverstop.

The whooping and the roaring renewed themselves, faces seemed on the point ofdisintegration, tears were streaming.

Pale, wild-eyed, the Director glared about him in an agony of bewildered humiliation.

The laughter, which had shown signs of dying away, broke out again more loudly than ever.

已出现平静迹象的笑声又爆发了出来，比以前更响了。

He put his hands over his ears and rushed out of the room.

主任用双手捂住耳朵冲出了房间。
