The more so, I say, because truly to enjoy bodily warmth, some smallpart of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely bycontrast.Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, andhave been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. But if, likeQueequeg and me in the bed, the tip of your nose or the crown of your head be slightly chilled,why then, indeed, in the general consciousness you feel most delightfully and unmistakablywarm. For this reason a sleeping apartment should never be furnished with a fire, which is oneof the luxurious discomforts of the rich.

　　不错,我们变得很清醒了;清醒得对我们这样躺着开始感到腻烦了,于是,慢慢地我们两人竟不知不觉地坐了起来;我们周身都紧裹着衣服,靠着床头板,曲起四只膝头,紧挨在一起,两只鼻子各自伏在膝盖上,仿佛我们的膝盖骨就是两只汤婆子。我们觉得十分舒服有趣,尤其是因为屋外很冷;也实在是因为我们没有铺盖,房间里没有生火的缘故。我认为,尤其是因为我们要真正享受身体上的温暖,便得让身体上若干细小的部分受一下冻,因为世间本来就没有什么不必经过比较的事物。光是一件事物是看不出什么好坏来的。如果有人自吹自擂地说,他是万般都舒适,而且已是舒服得很长久了,那么,只能说,他的舒服是到此为止了。除非是象魁魁格和我这样坐在床上,尽管鼻尖和头顶会微感寒意,但是,毫无问题的,在总的感觉说来,却是最愉快而且确实是很温暖的。因此,睡房里应该永远不要装置火炉,火炉是有钱人的奢侈而不舒服的设备。
