When I visited Mrs. Fairfax later that day, I knew she was amazed by the news that I was going to marry Mr. Rochester. [-----2-----], but I did not understand why.

"Oh, certainly not, Mrs. Fairfax!" I said. "He looks much younger than that!"

"Does he really love you?" she asked.
