a ballpark figure 的意思是：“粗略估计，大概的数字”，ballpark 指的是专供球类比赛的公园，特指大型的棒球场。在棒球比赛时都会报当天的观众人数，例如49132人，这个数49132就是ballpark figure，但这只是一个大约数字而已。因此，当美国人说"Can you give us a ballpark figure?"时，他/她要表达的意思就是:"Can you give us a rough number?"、"Can you give us an approximate amount?"。
