Xinhua News Agency, Ottawa, Oct. 19 (Reporter Lin Wei) Canada has withdrawn 41 of its diplomats from India amid escalating diplomatic tensions over the killing of Sikhs, Foreign Minister Stephen Jolly said in Ottawa on Monday.

At a press conference in response to the Indian government's expulsion of Canadian diplomats, Jolly confirmed that the Indian government has formally asked the diplomats and their families to leave by 20 days, or it will unilaterally revoke their diplomatic immunity.

Joly accused India of unilaterally escalating the diplomatic conflict, saying it was a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. But she also said Canada would not take reciprocal "retaliatory actions."

Canadian security agencies have been closely pursuing possible links between Indian government agents and the assassination of Canadian citizen and Sikh Hardeep Singh Nijar. On September 18, Canada's foreign ministry announced the expulsion of a senior Indian diplomat for alleged involvement in Nijar's assassination.

On September 19, India announced the expulsion of a "senior Canadian diplomat" and asked Canada to reduce the number of diplomats in India on the principle of reciprocity.

Nijar immigrated to Canada from India in the 1990s. He advocated independence for parts of India, was listed as a terrorist by the Indian government in July 2020, and was shot dead outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey County, British Columbia, Canada, on June 18.
