U.S. Senate Democrats have blocked a Republican bid to win quick approval for a bill providing emergency aid to Israel.

"The clock is ticking and the Senate cannot afford to delay providing this critical assistance to Israel any longer," said Republican U.S. Senator Roger Marshall. But Democrats opposed the bill, stressing the need to provide aid to both Ukraine and Israel, as well as humanitarian aid and funding for U.S. border security, which President Joe Biden, a Democrat, sent to Congress last month in a request totaling about $106 billion.

Senate Democrats also accused House Republicans of playing politics with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by tying aid to Israel to revenue cuts at the IRS rather than seeking to craft a bill that would be supported by both parties.

Of the $14.3 billion, $4 billion will be used to purchase Iron Dome and David Sling missile defense systems for Israel, while some military equipment will be transferred to Israel from existing U.S. stockpiles.
