The cooperation between China and the United States on the protection and research of giant pandas began in 1996, and the cooperation between China and the National Zoo of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., began in 2000. The two sides have established a good cooperative relationship and achieved positive results in the protection and breeding of giant pandas, disease prevention and control, diagnosis and treatment, and public education, and have played an important role in enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.

Staff at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo in Washington loaded three special "travel boxes" with giant pandas, 220 pounds of bamboo, drinking water and related supplies onto a truck Wednesday morning local time. The motorcade carrying Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and Little Wonder then left the zoo for Washington Dulles International Airport.
