According to reports, the fire broke out at about 12:47 p.m. The explosion and fire occurred during renovations at the nightclub in the Istanbul district of Besiktash, the governor's office said. The fire quickly spread through the store, filling the building with smoke and killing at least 29 people. A third person was injured and is being treated in hospital.

The nightclub had only one exit and most of those trapped inside died of smoke poisoning, the report said.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said the dead and injured were believed to be renovators and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
