There are all sorts of sounds around us, and we sometimes need to describe those sounds in writing or conversations.
It's not too difficult to describe sounds in Chinese but how about in English?
Look at the following Chinese descriptions and see whether you know how to say them in English:
震耳欲聋的机器声
呼啸而过的飞机声
尖锐刺耳的喇叭声
歇斯底里的狂笑声
How noisy is your car?
In this programme you will hear lots of everyday sounds as you are listening to a radio drama. We'll also provide you with a description of those sounds.

William: Are those familiar sounds to you?
Yang Li: 都是你熟悉的声音吗？
William: Are you able to describe them in English?

William: No? Then stay tuned.
Hi, I'm William Kremer.
Yang Li: 大家好我是杨莉，今天的《你问我答》节目将回答祝雅文同学的问题。

William: Well, this really is an excellent question for a radio programme, isn't it Li?
Yang Li: Yes, it is. Let's open our old friend, the BBC FX cupboard.
FX – a storm mix

At first there was deathly silence. Suddenly, this was broken by a rumble of thunder in the distance. Soon the wind was whistling through the trees and we could hear the waves
crashing on the beach. The storm had begun.
Yang Li: That's a short passage read by Mark.
William: Try to learn these descriptive expressions: a rumble of thunder
Yang Li: 滚滚的的雷声。
William: The wind whistling through the trees.

Yang Li: 风吹过时树叶发出的沙沙声。
William: Waves crashing on the beach.
Yang Li: 海浪拍击海滩或岩石时发出的声音。 Let's listen to the description again.

At first there was deathly silence. Suddenly, this was broken by a rumble of thunder in the distance. Soon the wind was whistling through the trees and we could hear the waves
crashing on the beach. The storm had begun.
Yang Li: Now William, you were camping at the weekend, so why don't you try to describe your experience for us and I'll try to match your description with some sound effects?
William: OK Li. I went camping with my family at the weekend. We put up our tent in a lovely spot beside a babbling brook. The birds were singing and it felt wonderful to be so far from the noisy traffic of the city. The weather wasn't brilliant on Sunday but it was actually quite cosy sitting inside our tent, listening to the rumble of rain on the roof. When it eventually stopped there was dead silence all around us. In the evenings we sat around a campfire, cooking sausages. As we sat under the stars, we could hear the crackling of the flames and the sizzling of the sausages.
Yang Li: Wow thank you William, that's a lovely description and you have managed to create a mental picture for the listeners. Can we have a recap of those expressions you used again?
William: Sure. First I said that we put up our tent in a lovely spot beside a babbling brook, or stream.
Yang Li: A babbling brook 潺潺的小溪。
William: The birds were singing...
It was cosy listening to the rumble of rain on the roof of the tent.
Yang Li: Rumble of rain.
William: The campfire crackled and the sausages sizzled!
Yang Li: 篝火噼噼啪啪地响, 烧烤着的香肠嗞嗞作响。
William: Now listen to a few more examples of everyday sounds and the description of these sounds.
FX of aircraft
William: Ear-splitting noise of three military aircraft.

Yang Li: 飞机刺耳的尖啸声。
William: You can also say a deafening noise to describe something really loud.
Yang Li: That's right, deafening 就是震耳欲聋的。
FX of traffic
William: Constant roaring noise of traffic.
Yang Li: 轰鸣的交通噪音。
FX of laughter
William: Hysterical laughter.
Yang Li: 歇斯底里的笑声，狂笑声。
William: Well we've shown you some basic sounds in everyday life and some of the descriptive words associated with those sounds.
