Past Perfect v Present Perfect
Wang Fei: Welcome to Question and Answer of the Week, from the BBC Learning English restaurant. I'm Wang Fei.
Finn: And I'm Finn. And today we'll be sampling some of the finest Chinese foods and English tenses.
Wang Fei: That's right, today we'll be serving up some 羊肉串儿 some 小龙虾 and some…
Finn: Some present perfect tense, with a little past perfect on the side!
Finn: Yes, one annoying thing about learning English is the tenses.
Wang Fei: 时态。
Finn: 时态。So to cheer us up we thought we'd order some tasty food…
Wang Fei:
Finn: So listen carefully for the noise! Now, let's open the menu. Wang Fei, how about some 回锅肉?
Wang Fei: 回锅肉? Have you tried it before?
Finn: Yes, I have tried it. 现在完成时) It's great!
Wang Fei: So, let's order some 回锅肉。 What else do you think Finn?
Finn: Hmmm… how about some 口水鸡? Have you eaten it before?
Wang Fei: Of course! And you?
Finn: I hadn't tried it before I went to China. 过去完成时) But I love it, let's order some. And how about some 羊肉串儿!
So, you went to Xinjiang last year didn't you?
Finn: I did.
Wang Fei: Had you tried 羊肉串儿 before you went to Xinjiang?
Finn: Yes, I tried them a long time ago.
Wang Fei: Ok, I also would like to order… some fish and chips?
Finn: Fish and chips, some 炸鱼和薯条? That's British food!
Wang Fei: 是的。
Finn: Had you tried it before you came to Britain?
Wang Fei: Actually, I hadn't tried it. 过去完成时) You can't get them in China, can you?
Finn: No, you can't. Ok, waiter! Some 回锅肉、口水鸡、羊肉串儿 and some fish and chips, please!
Finn: Have you tried I have tried 羊肉串儿。
Finn: Had you tried羊肉串儿 before you went to Xinjiang? I had tried羊肉串儿before that, yes.
Wang Fei:
Finn: And here comes the food. Right, we'll tuck in to our feast, and you can ask us any other questions about the English language.
Wang Fei: Yes – email us at chinaelt@bbc.co.uk. What's that?
Finn: These羊肉串儿 are amazing!
Wang Fei: And this 口水鸡 is also great. Mmmm. Excuse us.
Finn: We'll just continue eating!
Wang Fei: Bye!
Finn: Bye!
