Kaz: My favourite fruit idiom has to do with bananas. And it's 'to go bananas'. If you're very excited and going wild about something, you can say "I went bananas"! Well, you know, I like bananas, but I also like peanuts. And it's a bit of a sad one this, but I 'earn peanuts', which means I don't earn very much.

Yang Li: That’s just two of Kaz’s favourite food idioms. 大家好，我是杨莉。今天我们将继续回答金璐的问题介绍一些常用的食品成语。我们刚刚听到了 go bananas.疯狂，还有to earn peanuts 挣不了几个小钱。Apart from Kaz, I also spoke to Andrew, Abigail and Finn to see what their favourite food idioms are. Let’s start with Andrew with his favourite egg idioms:

And the first one, I suppose I have to confess, I occasionally make a fool of myself, and I would say I have ended up with 'egg on my face'.

Yang Li: 丢脸了，献丑了。To have egg on your face.

And there's another egg idiom, which is, I'm just thinking about the building that we're talking in, we're talking in the headquarters of the BBC, where, over the next year or so, the BBC is going to centralise a lot of its programmes and programme teams. There are going to be a lot of people here. Now, this might be a mistake, because it could be said that the BBC is 'putting all its eggs in one basket'.

Yang Li: 另一个成语是不要把所有的鸡蛋都放到一个篮子里。Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Good advice.

Then, another way of thinking about it, might be that sometimes we have big plans, big things we're doing, but to do them we have to maybe do some difficult things or hurt somebody's feelings to achieve what we want to achieve. And the saying that comes to mind is 'you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs'.

Yang Li: 另一个鸡蛋成语是不打破鸡蛋怎能做出炒蛋?You can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs. How true! The next one has to be cakes. There is birthday cake, wedding cake and Christmas cake. British people love cakes, don't they, Abigail?

Abigail: Yes, we love cake. How about 'a piece of cake'? So we'd say "Oh, that was nothing, it was a piece of cake, it was really easy".

Li: Very good. 非常容易，小菜一碟 。Another one?

Abigail: So, sometimes we say – if someone wants to have two things it's not possible to have, we say, "Girl, you can't have your cake and eat it".

Li: Brilliant! One more?

Abigail: Yes, well, hot cakes. We say that – if something is selling really quickly – we say, "It's selling like hot cakes".

Li: "iPhone 5 is selling like hotcakes", can I say that?

Abigail: Yes, if people are queuing up, they're flying off the shelves, people are just buying them, then we say "They're selling like hotcakes".

Li: Well done, long live cakes!

Yang Li: 刚才我们听到了的三个蛋糕成语分别是小菜一碟，a piece of cake. 鱼和熊掌不可兼得，you can’t have your cake and eat it. 当什么东西非常抢手的时候就可以说hot cakes. It’s selling like hot cakes. While Abigail likes cakes Finn loves pies, 馅儿饼。He began with this phrase.

Yang Li: 你能猜出来，这句话是什么意思吗?原来这是在嘲讽一个身体长胖的人。谁把所有的馅儿饼都吃了?

Li: That's very sarcastic, do you think the person will get upset about it?

Finn: Well, if they're someone who watches their figure, I think yes, they might be. But if someone said it to me I'd just laugh!

Finn: Another good idiom in English is to say 'you have a finger in many pies' or 'you have your fingers in many pies'. It means you're involved in a lot of different projects,maybe you do three different jobs, as a baker and a banker and an artist, and maybe you're involved in lots of different groups and clubs, so you have your fingers in many different pies.

Li: Are you talking about yourself?

Finn: I think it's good to have your fingers in lots of different pies, yes.

Li: I seem to have heard people say 'humble pie'.

Finn: So humble, what does humble mean? 很谦虚，very modest, that's good. But if you eat humble pie, it means you're forced to admit your mistakes.

Li: Right, let's try not to eat humble pie! Thank you so much.
