词组讲解

1. get a slap on the wrist **受到轻判

解 习语;词义溯源:手腕遭受[掌击(slap)];a slap on the wrist表示温和的惩戒;参照give sb. a slap on the wrist

例 If you defy my order, you'll get a punishment you'll never forget!Do you understand me? You won't get just a slap on the wrist like you have before. No, it will be severe and you'll wish you hadn't disobeyed. Got it?

2. get 〔have〕 a swelled head **过度骄傲,自负

解 习语;词义溯源:拥有[过度骄傲、自负(swelled head)];参照give sb. a swelled head

例 Don't give him any praise, please. He'll just get a swelled head and I can't stand when he's like that. So congratulate him, but no more, please.

3. get 〔have〕 a tongue-lashing **受到斥责

解 习语;词义溯源:遭受[斥责(tongue-lashing)];参照give sb. a tongue-lashing

例 Isat in my office on the second floor listening to the owner of the shop below me getting a tongue-lashing from an irate customer who felt he had been ripped off. It went on for about fifteen minutes.

4. get a word in edgewise 〔edgeways〕 **插话

例 The owner kept trying to talk back to the customer, but his yelling and screaming were overpowering and the poor owner couldn't get a word in edgewise. I felt sorry for her.

例 Oh, sorry I haven't come to see you. With my leg in a cast, I haven't been getting around much these days. It's rather difficult for me to get around on crutches, and I can't drive until the cast is removed.
