1. go away empty-handed *** 空手而归

解 短语动词;词义溯源:以[空手的(empty-handed)]状态[远远(away)]离去;参照come away empty-handed

例 I thought I was going to come away from the negotiation empty-handed and was worried what my boss was going to say when I got back to the office. Sensing my apprehension, Vitula Chemical's representative asked, “Worried you're going to go away empty-handed?”

2. go back on one's word ** 不履行诺言;说话不算数

解 习语;词义溯源:[向后(back)]离去[约定、诺言(word)]

例 Once you say “I do” to the priest who is going to administer the marriage ceremony, there's no going back on your word. So before you ask Belinda to marry you, give it some thought. If there's any doubt in your mind that you can keep your commitment for life, you'd better wait.

3. go bad ** (食物等)变质,开始腐坏
