1. run off at the mouth *** 夸夸其谈,信口开河

解 短语动词;词义溯源:从嘴里[脱离(off)]跑掉

例 Leroy! Come over here! What's this I hear about you running off at the mouth about a big shipment of guns coming from South America? You want me to cut your goddamn tongue out? You keep your big mouth shut or I'll cut your damn head off. Do I make myself clear? Now get the hell out of here.

2. run off with sb. or sth. *** 偷走,绑架;与某人一起私奔

解 短语动词;词义溯源:[带着(with)]某人或某物[远远地(off)]跑掉或与某人[一起(with)][远远地(off)]跑掉(逃掉)

例 It was just after 3:00 AM when I got the word that somebody had broken into the Smighsonian Space Museum and run off with the landing craft from the Apollo Eleven mission to the moon. My first thought was “this is exactly the kind of case I need to make a name for myself as a private detective. ”

3. run out of sth. / run out *** 用尽,耗尽;跑出去

例 He asked to stay over at my apartment for “just one night. ” Well it's been a week now. He's supposed to be looking for his own place, but he just sits around watching TV and eating everything I have. And when I've run out of something, he asks me to buy more! Damn, give him an inch and he takes a mile !

4. run over sb. or sth. *** (车辆)撞倒或碾过

例 Johnson started it. He took his truck and ran over Fender's flower bed. So Fender, to show he could give as good as he got , jumped into his car and rammed into Johnson's lawn furniture. Then the two neighbors jumped out of their vehicles and started pushing and shoving each other.

5. run riot 〔wild〕 ** 放肆,撒野;(植物等)随意生长

例 When we opened the factory door in the morning we found a mess. Someone had forgotten to turn off the automatic robotic supplies mover. Without anybody there to command it what to do, the machine ran wild all night long moving boxes at random all over the factory floor.
