在西方人的观念中,无论是私人会面还是商业约会,事先约定是基本社交礼仪。安排经理、老总们约会往往是秘书或者助理的职责。掌握上司的工作日程和活动,了解约会的目的和意图,是安排上司和他人约会工作中很重要的事情。预约可以当面进行,也可以通过传真,电子邮件和信函,但大多数都是电话商定约会的具体时间和地点。

必备的词汇热身

当请求约会的时候你会听到

Please call on me anytime suits you.

请在您方便的时候来找我。

call on拜访。指无目的、礼节性的短暂拜访。与“拜访”意思相关的还有see,visit,drop in。

see:常用词,含义广泛,既可指接受他人来访,又可指去访问他人。

visit:正式用词,强调出于工作需要的访问,也指亲戚朋友间的看望。

drop in:多指在计划之外或事先未打招呼的偶然、顺便访问。也可指参观。

I'm expecting some visitors tomorrow morning.

明天早上我要等几个访客来。

I have a full schedule next week.

我下个礼拜的时间都排满了。

I'll see you at two tomorrow afternoon.

明天下午两点见。

I'm sorry, he won't be available by then.

很抱歉,他那时没空。

drop by[口语]偶然(或顺便)走访;来串个门儿,顺便进去

例句:Drop by next week.

下星期有空就来吧。

in person亲自。表达“亲自”之意的还有:personally,oneself

If you would have a thing well done, do it yourself.

如果你希望一件事情做得很好,那就亲自做。

Until they do, they can exhort consumers to turn off the tap—or turn it off themselves.

在做这些事情之前,它们可以告诫消费者关上水龙头—或是亲自动手把它关掉。

A:Certainly. When would you like to meet with him?

B:Can you see what his schedule is like tomorrow?

A:Let me check the schedule. Please wait a moment.

B:OK.

A:He's free after 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.

B:I see. I'll visit him at 4:00 p.m.

A:布朗先生办公室。我是陈丽,有什么能帮您吗?

B:你好,陈小姐。我是邓立。我需要和布朗先生见个面。

A:没问题。您想什么时候见他?

B:你能看看他明天是怎么安排的吗?

A:我来查一下行程表,请等一下。

today与tomorrow:

表示“今天”“明天”,有两层意思:一是指狭义的今天、明天(相对昨天而言),二是广义地指现在、未来(相对过去而言);表示前者的意思通常用-'s构成所有格,表示后者的意思,通常用of构成所有格。例如:

Have you read today's paper?

你读过今天的报纸了吗?

The news will be in tomorrow's newspaper.

明天的报纸将刊载这条消息。

Young people of today have no manners.

如今的青年人不讲礼貌。

The world of tomorrow will be very different.

未来的世界将大不相同。

由于today和tomorrow可同时作名词或副词,所以用of构成所有格时,有时可省略of而直接用副词后置定语。如:women today(当今的妇女),the changes tomorrow(未来的变化)等。

另外,在现代英语中用于广义表示“现在”“未来”时,有时也可用-'s构成所有格,但不如用of普通。例如:

Today's youth will be the leaders of tomorrow.

现在的年轻人将成为未来的领导者。

王先生第二天下午要开董事会,而李先生有急事一定要在第二天下午和王先生见面。经过和秘书商议,王先生定了合适的约会时间。

A:We'll have the board meeting at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon, right?

B:Yes.

A:But the sales manager of Future Company, Mr. Lee, just called and insisted on seeing you tomorrow afternoon.

B:The board meeting will be finished at about 4:30.You could arrange his appointment after that.

A:I'm afraid I can't. He said that he would leave for Tokyo at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.

B:Then ask him to come to my office at two tomorrow afternoon.

A:OK.

B:Don't forget to inform him?

A:No problem. I will ring him at once.

A:我们明天下午三点半开董事会,是吗?

B:是的。

A:但是未来公司销售部经理李先生刚来过电话,还坚持说明天下午要见你。

B:董事会大概四点半结束。你可以把他安排在这个时间之后。

A:恐怕不行。他说他明天下午四点要去东京。
