keep the wolf from the door免于饥寒；勉强度日

狼（wolf）是一种肉食性野兽，在人们眼中，他生性残暴，贪得无厌，因此有关狼的词汇，大多带有贬义，例如：英语中“胃里有一匹狼”（have a wolf in the stomach）就是形容一个人狼吞虎咽的样子。

在英国古代，无论是森林或山路旁，都可以见到大批狼群出没；尤其当它们饥饿的时候，更是到处侵扰人畜。于是人们就用“狼在门口”（wolf at the door）表示“饥饿逼人”；也用“把狼拒之门外”（keep the wolf from the door.）表示“勉强度日”，“免于饥饿”的意思。例如：He earned vey little money and could hardly keep the wolf from the door.（他赚的钱很微薄，几乎难以糊口。）

We were thankful if we could keep the wolf from the door.（只要能免于饥饿，我们就谢天谢地了。）

“sales promotion（促销）”趣谈

春秋晚期（the late Spring and Autumn period），商业活动更加频繁，促销形式也由原来的实物展示逐步发展为口头叫卖、声响促销和旗帜促销等多种形。据说，姜子牙在店铺里卖肉时，把刀有意剁得当当响，并高声吆喝招揽顾客。此外，当时还有桥竹梆、摇拨浪鼓、击音叉等多种形式的声响促销。后来有些商贩把声响与叫卖结合起来，逐步发展演变成吹打乐器、吟唱歌谣和曲调等形式，大大增加了促销的艺术性和诱导性。
