ask for the moon直译是“要天上的月亮”，暗指“想入非非或不切实际”，与汉语“海底捞月、异想天开”相似。ask for the moon出自寓言故事—猴子捞月。一群猴子在树上玩耍，忽然看到水塘中的月亮，于是突发奇想，要把月亮“捞”上来，猴子一个接一个的从大树上倒挂下来，让接近水面的猴子在水里捞月亮，其结果可想而知。英语对此语的解释非常简练：ask for the moon（非要做没门的事） 。ask for the moon有时亦做cry for the moon，此语最早见于狄更斯的小说《荒凉山庄》（Bleak House）中，He was mere child in the world, but he didn't cry for the moon.（他年纪很小，可是他没有哭着闹着要天上的月亮。）
