B：By mid-April I think.

A：It's too late. You see, May is the season for this commodity in our market, and our customs formalities are rather complicated.

B：I understand. We check up on their production schedule against our orders almost every day. As new orders keep coming in, they have a race against the clock and are working three shifts to step up production. I'm sorry but we simply cannot commit ourselves beyond what the production schedule can fulfill.

A：货物是否可能在3月交货？

B：我看不行。

A：那么最早什么时候可以交货呢？

a race against the clock和时间赛跑，争分夺秒

A race against the clock的字面意思是“和时间进行比赛”，后被引申为“和时间赛跑，争分夺秒，在时间来不及之前快速完成某项任务”。例如：It was a race against the clock to rescue more wounded people under the collapsed building before the coming aftershock.要抢时间赶在余震到来之前救出更多的被压在废墟中的伤员。

该习语中的clock也可用time替换，习语含义不变。

A：Then we come to the next problem-shipment. For such a big order, we propose to have the goods dispatched by sea.

B：No problem, we'll deliver the consignment in three months, that is, by August 10th.

B：I'd like to deliver earlier, but I can't give you a check which I know will bounce.

A：We are scheduled to have a large exhibition in Paris on August 25th. The commodity must therefore be shipped before August; otherwise we won't be in time for the exhibition.

B：I can understand your position. But, to tell you the truth, our factories are heavily committed at the moment, and many clients are in urgent need of our products.

A：Mr. Wang, a timely delivery means a lot to us. Could you persuade your producer to deliver the goods earlier?

B：Because this is the first transaction, I wish we could make a deal. I'll get in touch with the producer and put the screw on them, ask them to try their best to advance the shipment to the end of July. Perhaps some other orders will be canceled. We'll keep you informed.

A：That's extremely thoughtful of you. I'm looking forward to receiving your favorable reply. Finally I have a request about delivery.

B：Go ahead, please.

A：I suggest that you ship the goods by a steamer of Convenience Company. The main reason is that their steamers offer the shortest time for the journey between China and France.

B：OK. No problem. We will go all out into this business.

A：接下来我们讨论一下装运问题，数量如此多的货物，我们建议走海运。

B：好的，我们在三个月内，也就是8月10日交货。

A：你能不能早一点交？比如说，7月20日？

put the screw on施加压力

Screw是17世纪时苏格兰的一种刑具，又称作thumbscrew或是thumbskins（拇指夹）。这个刑具形似老虎钳，上面有可拴紧放松的螺丝，行刑时，会将螺丝逐步拴紧以向犯人逼供，犯人的手一受到压迫的痛苦，便会在忍受不住时坦承罪行。这个成语的意义也由此而来。后被广泛应用，多被用来表示“施加压力”。例如：Beth's mother puts the screw on her and hopes she can get married before 30.贝丝的母亲对她施加压力，希望她在30岁以前结婚。
