In order for any work of art— for example, a film, a novel, a poem, or a song— to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

五问：

（1）“merit”应该被解释为什么？是“功能作用”，还是“价值”？如果这两种解释都可以，那么你对原命题观点的论述会如何展开？

（5）最终不被大部分人承认的艺术就一定是没有价值的吗？在人类发展的历史过程中，它们是否可能具有特定的价值？

Some people claim that any piece of art has to be comprehensible to the general public in order to be deemed worthy. However, such comprehensibility is a preferable, not an indispensible, quality of valuable artistic works. Vincent van Gogh, for example, expended huge amount of effort creating paintings that remained unpopular during his lifetime.

翻译练习：

凡·高的绘画对与他同时代的人来说如此无法理解（ be incomprehensible to），以至于他的才华在他有生之年都没有获得肯定。但是现在，没有人会否认他是超越他所处时代的伟大艺术家。
