People who are the most deeply committed to an idea or policy are also the most critical of it.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

五问：

（1）原题中的单词“critical”应该如何理解？“批评的”？“决定性的”？“危险的”？还是“临界的”？本题看似缺乏上下文，但是通过原论述中的“ also”，我们可以知道后文应该取与“ committed”对应的词义，因此将此处的“ critical”译为“批判性的”意思更为合适。因此原命题可翻译为：那些被某个想法或政策深深吸引（或对此深表赞同）的人们，同时也是对这一想法或政策批评最多的人。

（2）对一个想法表示赞同有多种方式，可以是全盘接受的，也可以是批判性的，你认为哪种情况更为合理？能说说为什么吗？例如：认为全盘接受更合理，可能是因为批判性的赞同是表面上接受一些自认为或公认不正确的事情，在心理上可能并不赞同，甚至会提出相反的意见。

（3）你能否举一个具体的例子来描述原命题中提到的情况？这个例子最终的结果是好的还是坏的？举一个得到好结果的例子。例如：爱因斯坦创立了物理学中的相对论，也是量子力学的创始人之一，但他发现两种理论存在矛盾之处，在此后多年的研究中，他一直在想办法推翻自己的理论，并试图提出一种新的理论来使两种理论协调统一。正是因为他熟知自己的理论，才能批判地看待自己的理论，并更加深入地思考问题，这种批判和推翻自己理论的行为推动了物理学的发展。

（4）在《圣经》旧约中有这样一句话：Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding（你要专心仰赖耶和华，不可倚靠自己的聪明）。你对宗教持什么样的态度？能否结合这句话来分析你对原命题的看法？这样做有何利弊？

（5）为什么对于自己所持的信念，有人不愿提出质疑，而有人愿意提出质疑？例如：有的人不愿质疑，是因为害怕承受自己的信念是错误的事实；有的人愿意提出质疑，是因为可以让自己更加全面、彻底地认识自己的信念从而避免盲从。这对自己的信念有帮助吗？

翻译练习：

对一个观点最忠诚的人往往也是对其批评最多的人，这看似矛盾，因为人们所期望的忠诚是支持和捍卫，而非质疑和不信任。但是或许是出于持续改进自己理论的愿望，很多科学家才允许自己暂时站到相反的一方去。

It seems contradictory that the most committed to an idea are also the most critical of it, since most people expect commitment to be more of support and defense than of questioning and distrust. But perhaps it is out of the hope to continually improve their own theory that many scientists allow themselves to take the opposite side temporarily.
