瑞银将重组美国经纪业务管理层

Oswald Grübel, UBS's chief executive, wants to shake up the top managerial ranks of the embattled bank's brokerage business in the US after deciding against a sale, according to people familiar with the matter.

知情人士称，瑞银(UBS)首席执行官郭儒博(Oswald Grubel)打算对该行美国经纪业务最高管理层进行重组，此前该行决定不出售该业务。

UBS has repeatedly considered a sale of its US wealth management business, which consists mainly of the Paine Webber unit acquired in 2000 for $10.8bn, and held unsuccessful talks with Morgan Stanley, among others, late last year.

瑞士曾多次考虑出售其美国财富管理业务，并在去年末与摩根士丹利(Morgan Stanley)等公司进行了谈判，但未获成功。该业务主要包括瑞银2000年以108亿美元收购的普惠公司(Paine Webber)。

After taking over at the Swiss bank in February, Mr Grübel, former chief executive of Credit Suisse, also looked at offloading the business, which sells financial products to wealthy clients.

But bankers say he has opted to keep the business for the time being. As part of his determination to fix and expand an operation that has been hampered by underperformance and a long-running battle with US tax authorities, Mr Grübel is said to be looking for a new leader for the US operations.

People close to the situation said UBS had contacted senior figures in the financial industry to sound them out over taking a top role in its US brokerage business. It is not clear whether they were being asked to replace Marten Hoekstra, the head of UBS's wealth management operations in the Americas, or to work alongside him.

UBS said it was committed to its wealth management business in the US but declined to comment on whether there was any executive search under way.

UBS's private banking and wealth management operations in the US have been hamstrung by a US Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service probe into whether the bank helped as many as 19,000 American citizens move $20bn into overseas bank accounts, avoiding as much as $300m in annual taxes.
