Xinjiang Builds Chinas Largest Provincial-Level Power Network

Northwest Chinas Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has built the countrys largest provincial-level power network, according to the State Grids Xinjiang branch.

Some RMB 71.7 billion (about US $10.33 billion) has been invested in the regions power grid development during the 2016-2020 period, the company said. So far there are 24 substations of 750-kilovolt or above and 60 power transmission lines with a total length of 8,261 kilometers in Xinjiang, all thanks to the accelerated power grid expansion over the past five years. The expanded electricity network has made stable power supply a reality in many remote and poor areas in Xinjiang which used to rely only on isolated solar power and hydropower grids.

Xinjiang is rich in coal and wind power resources. Data from the local electricity trading center showed that Xinjiang now transmits electricity to 19 other Chinese provincial-level regions.

EV Charging Infrastructure Expanded

The latest data released by China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance shows that about 10,000 charging poles for electric vehicles (EV) were installed every month from August 2019 to July 2020. By the end of July, there were 1.34 million sets of EV charging infrastructure for public use across China, representing an increase of 27.6 percent year on year.

In a regional breakdown, most of this infrastructure, 73.1 percent, was found in 10 regions of the country– Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Beijing, Shandong, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hebei, Hubei, and Fujian. When measured by the amount of electricity charged, top users are buses and other passenger vehicles, while a small amount goes to sanitation and logistic vehicles and taxis. Totally 670 million kWH were charged in July 2020, up 70 million kWh from the previous month and 52.4 percent over the same period of last year.

More Women Working in Science and Technology

The volume of Chinas sci & tech human resources remains the largest in the world, and the presence of women in the sector has been increasing steadily, said a recent report by China Association for Science and Technology.

According to the report, by the end of 2018 Chinas sci & tech personnel totaled 101.55 million (including those who have left China for other countries). Among the people who joined the ranks in 2016 and 2017, the share of women is bigger in the groups with higher academic degrees. Women accounted for more than half of sci & tech workers with postgraduate education degrees.

As institutions of higher education are the main incubator of sci& tech professionals, the number of female college students has direct impact on the presence of women in the sci & tech sector. During the 2015-17 period, the share of girls in all students recruited into colleges through Chinas college entrance exam stayed about 54 percent. In the 2016-17 period, the increase in the number of female sci & tech professionals outpaced that of all other personnel working in the sector in China. This presages the percentage of female scientists and technicians will continue to grow in the future.

Chinas First Private Satellite Plant Breaks Ground

Construction of Chinas first privately owned satellite plant began on September 1 in Tangshan, a coastal city in Hebei Province and is expected to start operation at the beginning of 2021. Its production capacity will be about 100 satellites which weigh between 50 and 500 kilograms. The plant is run by Commsat, a private satellite producer in Beijing.

Commsat President Peng Yuanyuan told the media that the Tangshan plant will adopt pulseline manufacturing and intelligence technology to produce satellites in a fast and cost-effective manner. The plant will not only manufacture satellites but also conduct research on spacebased communication technology and ground applications.

Currently, all satellite manufacturing facilities in China belong to stateowned entities like China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited.

Founded in June 2015, Commsat is one of the leading private enterprises in Chinas space business sector. It placed eight small satellites it designed and built in orbit in 2018. Its revenue stood at nearly RMB 100 million (US $14.7 million) in 2019.
