新疆皮山县暴力袭击事件致8人死亡

Paramilitary police have been deployed in a town in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang after a clash that left eight people dead, state media said.

据官方媒体报道，新疆一个县城发生暴力事件，造成8人死亡，之后县城里部署了武警。

Police shot dead three “terrorists” wielding knives who had killed five people and wounded five others in the town of Pishan on Tuesday, said the website of the Hotan regional government, in southern Xinjiang, on Wednesday.

新疆南部和田地区政府网站周三发布消息称，周二有3名暴徒在皮山县城持刀砍杀群众，造成5人死亡，5人受伤。警方已击毙这3名暴徒。

Beijing blames attacks in Xinjiang, on the frontier with Central Asia, on terrorism and separatists among the Uighurs, a Muslim Turkic people native to the region. Uighurs often say the unrest is in response to Chinese policies, including restrictions on religion, Uighur education and dress, as well as disputes over land, water and employment.

Chinese media coverage of attacks in Xinjiang is often limited to terse accounts from police or is censored altogether. Foreign reporters have difficulty accessing much of the region. The Pishan government referred queries about the attack to the regional propaganda bureau.

Uighurs in Pishan, an impoverished desert county that rises into the Pamir mountains, and other communities around the regional jade trading centre of Hotan, practice a stricter version of Islam than elsewhere in Xinjiang, intensifying tensions with Chinese security forces.

The latest clash comes a month after police in Pishan shot dead three suspects they were attempting to arrest for an April 2015 attack that state media never reported. Radio Free Asia reported that eight were killed in Pishan when a suicide bomber grabbed a police officer in February 2015.

In the neighbouring county of Moyu, known to Uighurs as Karakax, a government official and a security guard were killed by three men who rammed a car into a Communist party compound in late December, state media said.

The three attackers were shot dead and the party secretaries of Moyu and Hotan, both Han Chinese, were placed under investigation for dereliction of duty and suspected violation of discipline.
