Google is investigating suspicious advertising across YouTube, search and Gmail, as it tries to understand whether Russian actors used the company’s platform to try to influence the US presidential election.

The Alphabet-owned internet company’s investigation follows probes by Facebook and Twitter, both of which have discovered attempts by Russian groups to buy ads on political and social issues targeted at US audiences before and after the election last year.

Congress has called all three companies to testify before investigators looking into Russian interference in last year’s election, ranging from misinformation online to the hacking of the Democratic National Committee.

A Google spokesperson said it was taking a “deeper look” at attempts to abuse its systems. Google is doing its own research and working with other companies.

“We have a set of strict ads policies including limits on political ad targeting and prohibitions on targeting based on race and religion,” the spokesperson said.

The Washington Post first reported that Google had discovered suspicious activity. The newspaper said Google had found tens of thousands of dollars spent by Russian agents, across several properties, including its advertising network DoubleClick.

YouTube, the Google-owned video site, is also facing questions about a channel called Williams and Kalvin, where two video bloggers argue African Americans should not vote for Hillary Clinton. The Daily Beast reported that the corresponding accounts on Facebook and Twitter have been removed, because they were found to be part of the Russian influence campaign, but that the YouTube channel remains.

A YouTube spokesperson said the video site terminates the accounts of users who repeatedly violate guidelines or terms of service. “All videos uploaded to YouTube must comply with our community guidelines and we routinely remove videos flagged by our community that violate those policies,” she said.

Google’s investigation comes after Facebook discovered a Russian group spent $100,000 to buy ads shown to 10m users. Ads were targeted at swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, on topics from race to guns to protecting the right to say Merry Christmas, according to US media.

Twitter discovered 200 suspicious Russian accounts. But it was criticised by senator Mark Warner, vice-president of the Senate intelligence committee, which is investigating Russian interference in the election. He complained that Twitter piggybacked on Facebook’s research, looking only for accounts related to those flagged by the larger social network, rather than conducting a broader search for suspicious activity.
