　　My honest, hard-working father stood before the judge to explain why he wished to be excused from jury duty. "Your Honor, my small grocery store is the sole means of support for my wife and eight children. To serve as a juror would mean closing the store, and I can't sfford that."

　　"Mr. Jones, what if everyone were like you?" asked the judge.

　　"Your Honor," my father replied, "if everyone were like me, you wouldn't be needing a jury."

　　我诚实而勤劳的父亲站在法官面前。解释他为什么希望免去陪审义务。“法官大人，我的小杂货店是我养活妻子和八个孩子的唯一经济来源。当陪审员就意味着要关店，我承受不起。”

　　“法官大人，”我父亲回答说，“要是每个人都象我，你就不需要陪审团了。”
