Ernest Hemingway, the Nobel prize winner, has a famous remark, “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” That means one should be strong, confident and optimistic. 1 Even if you lose the game, your spirit should always remain upbeat. 2

Life is full of difficulties and failures. Meanwhile, man is endowed with strong personalities, such as courage, confidence, optimism, great ambition and strong will, with which one challenges the nature, decides his fate in his ceaseless pursuit of life, overcomes difficulties and failures and scores the last victory. 3

As human beings, we should lead a life with dignity and grace. Dignity and grace mean heroism and strong personalities. That is easier said than done. Without unconquerable spirit, one can be easily defeated by fate. But with such spirit, one can be capable of claiming spiritual victory even under disastrous circumstances. To be a man is to act with dignity: not to succumb to suffering but to shoulder one’s duty without complaint. 4

Bravery and confidence coupled with a spirit that one never gives up can change a tragic fate. 5
