The expression “Jack of all trades and master of none” is a figure of speech used in reference to a person who is competent with many skills but is not necessarily outstanding in any particular one. 1 In my opinion, our society needs more people of masters instead of jacks of all trades. 2
A Jack of all trades is used to describe a person who can do many different kinds of work but not necessarily well. Being eager to learn and acquire numerous skills, they are admired for their versatility. Their experience teaches them to work with people from different walks of life and perform a great variety of duties. 3 However, despite their many skills, “master of none” makes bad impression on others. Nowadays, work has become more and more specialized. People who are specialized in a particular field are more and more popular. 3
As I see it, a Jack of all trades does enjoy many choices in the work. But if at the same time he happens to be a master, he will be quite adaptable in modern society as a generalist and expert. 4
