Debates have arisen concerning the advantages and disadvantages of the use of technology. 1 Proponents hold the view that the advancement of technology brings us into a more civilized and advanced society while 2 opponents contend that technological development produces negative by-products simultaneously—pollution, consumption of natural resources, and impairs the earth’s environment. They also believe the nuclear weapons will lead human beings to extinction.

As to me 3 , the advantages of technology outweigh its disadvantages. It changed the world we live in, our life style, and our way of thinking. It provides us with more diversified choices and it prolongs our life span. It is technology that makes the world convenient, colorful, and abundant. However, that doesn’t mean we should forget its downside. Nuclear disasters and environmental pollution are all disadvantages of technological development.

In summary, technology plays an important role in contemporary society. The pace of human progress will slow down without it. But its negative effect should not be neglected. Technology should be utilized and exploited wisely to ensure that it will benefit humanity but not be detrimental to the earth. 4
