The slavery drama '12 Years a Slave' won best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, but it was the outer-space spectacle 'Gravity' that took home the most awards in a near-sweep of the evening's technical categories.

In the lead acting categories, 'Dallas Buyers Club' star Matthew McConaughey won for his performance of a Texas man living with AIDS, and Cate Blanchett won best actress for her performance in Woody Allen's 'Blue Jasmine,' playing a woman suffering a nervous breakdown after her financier husband is busted for criminal activity. Both winners were thought to be favorites in their categories.

'12 Years a Slave' was considered a front-runner for the top award since its premier at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, but in recent months many in Hollywood thought the blockbuster success and technical achievement of Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity' would win out. Mr. Cuaron won the best director prize.

'12 Years a Slave' breakout star Lupita Nyong'o won the award for best supporting actress. In an emotional speech, Ms. Nyong'o acknowledged Patsey, the real-life slave whom she portrayed, and ended her speech by saying, 'No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid.' The movie also won the award for best adapted screenplay. '12 Years a Slave' was distributed by Fox Searchlight, the specialty film division of Twentieth Century Fox. Fox is owned by 21st Century Fox Inc., which until recently was part of the same company as The Wall Street Journal.

'Gravity' won a total of seven awards, including the prizes for best visual effects and cinematography. 'American Hustle,' which tied with 'Gravity' with 10 nominations, didn't win any Oscars.

In the first speech of the evening, Mr. Leto briefly turned attention to unrest in Ukraine and Venezuela, addressing residents there and saying, 'We are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible, we're thinking of you tonight.'

At one point, Ms. DeGeneres ventured into the audience to take a smartphone 'selfie' with a group of A-list celebrities including Angelina Jolie and Meryl Streep, and later handed out slices of pizza to celebrities in the front rows.

The animated musical was expected to gross more than $1 billion in world-wide box office on Sunday and the movie's most popular number, 'Let It Go,' won the Oscar for best original song.
