1. clean up: 整理，打扫。Casey在这里的意思是“你打扮得不错”。

此外，clean up用在口语中还可以表示“赚钱，发财”，例如Jim昨天买彩票，he cleaned up ten thousand pounds（赚到一万英镑）。

2. be into: 给迷住，对……深感兴趣。例如：A lot of people in my age are into comic books.（一些像我这么大的人很喜欢看漫画书）。

3. Hors d'oeuvre：（正餐前的）开胃食品。这个词原本是法文，指的是招待会或晚餐前吃的小点心。

例如：You should have been at the French Embassy reception last night. The hors d'oeuvres were so tasty.（你昨晚真应该去参加法国使馆的招待会。他们的点心真好吃。）

4. slide show: 幻灯片。为了让来宾了解George和Tess相处的真相，Jane put together a slide show（制作了一张幻灯片）。

5. get cold feet: 临阵退缩。

例如：I really need to get my teeth fixed, but every time I start to phone the dentist, I think about the sound of that drill and right away I get cold feet.（我实在应该去牙大夫那儿看牙了。但是，每当我拿起电话想和大夫预约的时候，我就好像听到那钻牙的声音，一下子，我就害怕起来了。）

6. A picture is worth a thousand words: 百闻不如一见，画意能达万言。

7. soul mates: 性格相投的人，心心相印的伙伴（尤指异性），通常也被称为“灵魂伴侣”。

现代社会常常会听到一些人对自己的婚姻做这样的判断：I wouldn't marry anyone until I run into a soul mate of mine.他们的态度就是“碰不到性情相同的人决不结婚。看来人们对婚姻的质量要求越来越高了。

8. safe to say: 这样说没什么不妥，可以这样说。

例如：It's safe to say that British people always talk about the weather when they meet.（可以这样会说，英国人见面总谈论天气）。

9. vegetarian: 素食主义者。素食主义是一种饮食文化，实践这种饮食文化的人称为素食主义者，这些人不食用来自动物身上各部分所制成的食物，包括动物油、动物胶。世界各国或不同文化下的素食主义有所不同，有些素食主义者可食用蜂蜜、奶类和蛋类，有些则否。

10.engagement ring：订婚戒指。

Engagement在这里指“订婚、婚约”。而“毁约”则用break out the engagement来表示。

例如：John has broken off his engagement to Mary.（约翰已经毁了和玛丽的婚约。）

11.compass: 罗盘，指南针。

Casey在这里的意思是“虽然我称不上很有道德，但我还是觉得你错了。”

12.stand up for：支持，拥护。

例如：He stands up for women's rights（他支持妇女权益。）

13.Don't get me wrong：不要误会我。

例如：Don't get me wrong I just want to look.（不要误会我，我只想看看）。
