Back in the 'dress for success' 1980s, the interview suit -- dark and serious year round -- was a woman's trusty piece of armor. It conveyed that you were serious about fitting in with the guys and climbing the corporate ladder. That uniform sounds positive archaic today, when women have more confidence to project their individual style, even at a job in banking, accounting or politics.

On middle-aged women, a conventional jacket and skirt can work if you choose unexpected colors and combinations. Try this: a navy straight skirt that grazes the knee, worn with a fitted seersucker or madras blazer and a sleeveless ruffled or v-neck blouse in a bold color -- shocking pink, orange or red. On scorching days, throw the jacket over your shoulders, or if your arms are firm, skip the jacket completely. If you insist on wearing pants, choose a skinny or boot-cut silhouette. What's easy here is you can swap out blouses in strong shades and always look fresh. Accessorize with mid-heeled slingbacks or strappy sandals.

If your interview is at a design firm, a software company or in another field where the dress code is decidedly casual, you might feel comfortable wearing pressed jeans with a blouse or a knit wrap dress. But bear in mind: Corporate recruiters say candidates are rarely criticized for overdressing. You can always loosen up once you get the job.

As for pantyhose, many corporate women have ditched them in favor of the bare-legged look, especially in the height of summer. I have come to think of pantyhose as a layer of foundation make-up for the legs. If your legs have cellulite, spider veins or other flaws, then by all means don super-sheer hose.
