老子《道德经》英译第十七章

　　【原文】

　　太上，不知有之;其次，亲而誉之;其次，畏之;其次，侮之。

　　信不足焉，有不信焉。

　　悠兮其贵言。功成事遂，百姓皆谓：我自然。

　　【现代汉语】

　　最好的国家政治形态是人民根本感觉不到管理、统治者的存在;其次一等的形态是，人民愿意亲近并赞美统治者;更次一等则是人民畏惧统治者;最次一等的是人民厌恶、憎恨统治者。

　　统治阶层的诚信不足是导致人民不信任它的根本原因。

　　最好的政治形态中，统治者与人民悠然并存，绝不轻易发号施令。国家事务井井有条，百姓都说：“我们本来就是这样的。”

　　【译文】

　　The people of the state do not know that there is the rulers and governor in the first-class political structure; in the secondary class, people love them and praise them; in inferior people be in feared of them; in inferior people despise and hat them.

　　The governor has not good faith is the basic reason why people do not trust in them.

　　In the first-class political structure, the governor gets along with people easily and never issue orders inconsiderately. But, the national affairs are all in perfect order at the same time. The people all said, 'We are as we are, of ourselves!'

　　之所以崇敬老子、仰慕老子，崇拜老子，还有一个很重要的原因——多少有一点乌托邦的色彩，但我觉得天下大同，一定会实现的。在人类真正认识了自己在大自然中的角色，并能默默扮演这一角色、承担这一角色所应承担的责任的时候，而且是所有人都能这样的时候。

　　我满怀信心地期待着，每一个人其实都应有如此期待。
