4月19日，在清华大学建校110周年校庆日即将来临之际，中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平来到清华大学考察。习近平在考察时强调，要坚持中国特色世界一流大学建设目标方向，我国高等教育要为服务国家富强、民族复兴、人民幸福贡献力量。
President Xi Jinping stressed adhering to the direction of building world-class universities with Chinese characteristics as he visited Tsinghua University on April 19 ahead of its 110th anniversary. Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said China's higher education should make contributions to the prosperity of the country, the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the well-being of the people.

高水平大学是一个国家综合国力和科学文化水平的重要标志，是国家核心竞争力的有力支撑，在引领经济社会发展中发挥着巨大作用。从上世纪90年代至今，我国高水平大学建设之路行稳致远，培养了大批高素质专业人才。如今，我国高等教育在学总规模已经稳居世界第一，2020年高等教育毛入学率达54.4%，成为名副其实的高等教育大国。
2015年8月18日，中央全面深化改革领导小组第十五次会议审议通过《统筹推进世界一流大学和一流学科建设总体方案》，推动实现我国从高等教育大国到高等教育强国的历史性跨越。根据《总体方案》，到2030年，更多的大学和学科进入世界一流行列，若干所大学进入世界一流大学前列，一批学科进入世界一流学科前列；到本世纪中叶，一流大学和一流学科的数量和实力进入世界前列，基本建成高等教育强国。
