CNN News:父亲是孩子的榜样

According to information from the U.S. Census, almost half of all African-American children in the country don`t grow up with the steady father figure in their lives. Sheldon Smith was one of these people. But when his daughter was born in 2009, he didn`t just commit to staying involved in her life, he later started a nonprofit program to help other young men do the same thing. Since 2010, almost 200 young fathers have completed it.

根据美国人口普查数据，在美国几乎有一半的非裔美国孩子在其成长过程中没有收获稳定的父亲形象。谢尔顿`史密斯是这样的一个父亲。当自己的女儿在2009年出生的时候，史密斯不仅仅一直陪伴在女儿的生活里，并且之后创立非盈利计划帮助其他年轻人做同样的事情。自2010年，约有200位年轻的父亲完成了这个计划。

Growing up, my father was in and out of my life. I remember when I was a young boy, my father said he`s going to pick me up.

我在长大的时候，父亲离开了我的生活。我记得自己还是一个孩子时，父亲说他会来接我。

I sat on the porch all day and he never came. I grew up broken. I just started hanging with the wrong people.

When I got out of jail, I was able to go back to high school. I graduated on time.

My daughter Jada is the light of my life.

Wanting to be the best example for her, that is my number one concern. A lot of young men faced the same issues that I was facing.

我的第一个问题就是成为女儿最好的榜样，很多年轻人和我面临着相同的问题。

My father was in and out of my life.

My father was a heroine addict.

我的父亲是一个瘾君子。

He didn`t teach me how to be a man.

He didn`t know who I was.

他不知道我是谁。

I don`t want to go see that man.

我不想去见那个男人(我的父亲)。

How many of y`all looking to be role model to y`all own kid.

有多少年轻人想要成为自己孩子的楷模。

I wanted to provide these men with the skills that they need to be great role models and successful fathers to their children.

我想为这些人提供他们所需要的技能，让他们成为伟大的榜样、成功的父亲。

A lot of dads come out and say, I didn`t grow with my daddy, so I really don`t know how to be father. If it played an effect on you, what are you going to do to better your child`s life?

有很多的父亲说，自己成长过程中没有爸爸参与，所以并不知道应该如何做一个父亲。如果这对你有作用，那么你会做些什么来改善孩子的生活呢?

We teach the fathers parenting skills, life skills, and they receive a job, a GED, or training, along with the (INAUDIBLE).

我们传授父亲育儿技能、生活技能，让他们有工作、接受普通教育和培训。

I mean, this program, I`m trying to do better. But my son, you`re going to have to do whatever you do.

我的意思是，这个项目，我想做得更好。但我的儿子，你可以做任何你想做的事。

It`s not a mandatory program. So, these young men are really volunteering to get the help and support that they actually need.

Without Sheldon, I`d probably still be out in the street somewhere. He really opened up my eyes and he inspired me to go back to school.

The program thought me I can be a man by being a father to my baby. I`m a fourth time dad again.

When I look at these young men, I see me in them all the time

Fatherhood doesn`t come with a manual. I`m able to help young men turn their lives around by breaking the cycle of fatherless homes.

成为父亲并没有手册。我能帮助年轻人打破孤儿家庭的循环，扭转他们的生活。
