Rising to fame as a sweet-faced child star, the 26-year-old US actress-turned-singer is good at making a statement with her songs and eccentric looks and behavior both on and off the red carpet.

But Cyrus believes that being a wild child was just part of her experience of growing up.

“You are 20 … you haven’t figured it out yet, and 10 years from now I am supposed to have it all together,” she told the Associated Press in a 2013 interview.

But now Cyrus has reinvented herself as a much saner person. Last year, a wildfire destroyed Cyrus and her then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth’s beloved home in California. Despite being heartbroken she learned to deal with the loss through growth.

“Life is a series of adjustments,” she told E!News. “It’s really a deep character challenge to see the way you react to loss.”

Indeed, loss can be a blessing in disguise. Last month, Cyrus and Hemsworth, the 28-year-old Australian actor who stars in The Hunger Games films, got married after a decade of an on-and-off relationship that began when they met in 2009.

“Being independent”, as Cyrus told Billboard magazine, is what makes their relationship work. Over the decade, when they were apart, the two experienced their own growth. Although Cyrus may not have always behaved perfectly, she has used her experience to become the person she is today.
