1. give one a run for one's money ** 挑战;给予某人他所期待或想要的

解 习语;词义溯源:给予与付费相当的[争购、人气(run)];参照get a run for one's money

例 The highly popular former television newscaster is giving the famous Senator a run for his money in an election. She is trailing the Senator by only two percentage points in polls taken of likely voters last week.

2. give sb. a hand with sth. / give sb. a hand ** 帮助某人,助某人一臂之力

解 习语;词义溯源:给予某人有关某事的[援手、援助(hand)];参照get a hand with

例 Notice: The Ladies Community Club needs volunteers for the upcoming summer charity festival. Anyone who would like to give a hand with the event, please contact Mrs. Lisa Hoover at 291-4399 in the evenings.

3. give sb. a hard time ** 让某人做不必要的苦差事,使经历磨难

例 Judge Wobber ordered the police department to stop giving Mr. Lely a hard time everywhere he goes. The judge ruled that the department's activities were harassment and warned them to stay away from Mr. Lely unless they could show just cause for doing otherwise.

4. give sb. a rough idea of sth. ** 告知大体想法或评价

5. give sb. the devil / give sb. hell ** 痛骂,严惩
