被偷走的孩子

这首带有歌谣色彩的诗歌是诗人最出色的作品之一，每个段末的叠句很有童谣的感觉，在形式上与诗的主干相呼应。
这首诗是以一个精灵的口吻，呼唤一个人间的孩子随他一起去精灵的仙岛。精灵描述着仙岛的美丽与仙岛生活的无忧，还指出了“而你们的世界却充满了烦恼，在睡眠里也冲突着无尽的焦躁”。他在每一段的末尾，不断以童谣似的叠句来做出呼唤，让人间的孩子离开他所属于的那个“哭声太多”的现实世界。
在诗的末段，孩子终于牵上精灵的手，和精灵一起离去了，但是，离开时，他的眼神却是庄重的。他终于逃离了现实，去往了仙岛，而其代价，是放弃了人间一些小小的、朴素的快乐。
现实的世界里充斥着我们所无法了解的哭声，因而我们会向往仙岛，向往“在魔桶里藏进了满满的浆果”的迷人岁月。
没有人能够拿出确凿的证据，证明仙岛和精灵都是虚幻不实的。有很多人曾经亲眼见过天使或者仙女——他们只是绝口不谈而已，但是，他们甜蜜的笑容却泄露了这个秘密……

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water-rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berries
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim grey sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances,
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears

那儿，漂泊的流水
从葛兰卡的山坡冲下，
藏进芦苇的小小缝隙，

我们倚靠在蕨草上，看那蕨草
把泪水滴落进年轻的溪流。
