Then he came up with a good idea: After that he went to work in the daytime as usual, but when he went back home every day, he began to keep reading in the evening. Gradually, things began to change. The son followed his father’s lead and became increasingly interested in reading and finally formed the habit of learning by himself after school. This story teaches us the truth that example is better than precept. 2

But, there always are some parents who care much about precept and care less about example. Some parents’ words are not matched by their deeds, which has negative effects on children, not to mention playing a good role in parenting. 2

To sum up, parents should try their best to be good examples for their children. Example should be given top priority with precept as supplement and parents’ actions should be consistent with what they say. 3
